Our Place at the Table: honoring birth mother stories
Birth mothers are mothers who have placed or lost their child to adoption. While society honors mothers and adoption practices become more open, birth mothers continue to be hidden, stereotyped and stigmatized. On Mother’s Day weekend 2013, this exhibition recognized these women as mothers and acknowledged the diversity and complexity of their experiences.
Our Place at the Table: Honoring Birth Mother Stories offered a collection of 18 personal objects contributed by birth mothers. These objects told a wide range of honest and important stories, from the decision to place or relinquish a child, to being pregnant, to living in an open or closed adoption.
This exhibition was a collaborative effort with the Adoption Museum Project, On Your Feet Foundation, 23 birth mothers and Exhibits of Humanity (before it was a formal organization).
