A BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The exhibit focuses on the subtle and profound gender discrimination that women in stand-up comedy confront on a daily basis. Some of it is unabashed misogyny, but a lot of the sexism in comedy is structural, even unintentional. By sharing the stories of women in stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, we hope to open up a larger discussion about sexism in the 21st-century workplace.
WHY STAND-UP COMEDY?
Stand-up comedy has historically been a male-dominated field. Comedy show lineups are filled with men, and audiences still largely expect to see men on stage. Despite the success of a handful of high-profile female comedians, white men are still considered the “default” in stand-up comedy.
